New 2018 Jeep Wrangler Scrambler
The legendary “father of SUVs,” the Jeep Wrangler, decided to upgrade a fellow on the model line in the back of a pickup truck. Moreover, it will not be a conversion from a well-known army variation, but a completely independent factory model, which is planned to be assembled in Ohio, in Toledo, for which they are now hastily working on modernizing the lines.
I am glad that the Chrysler players, despite the quite decent commercial success of their light Comanche, decided to revive a full-scale massive pickup truck.
Any fan of the genre will agree that the model was and remains a classic, which just needs a little bit of modernizing. Moreover, according to experts, the market is now ready to reciprocate with it, and not only in their native American land.
Well, it remains to wait quite a bit - according to rumors, mass production will begin in the fall of this year, and, consequently, the new generation Scrambler will get to dealers in the beginning of 2019. Although, at the same time, a number of sources say that it’s not worth waiting for official sales before the end of next year.
New in the design and design of the pickup
The basis for the new generation of pickup, of course, served as an elongated version of the Wrangler JL, which is marked CJ-8. Why the brand decided to revive the frame from the 80s, and not try something new - remains a mystery.
But, judging by the drawings leaked into the network, this idea should justify itself one hundred percent, because that version was truly unique in its universality, practicality and reliability. And, besides, took into account all the disadvantages of the two-door predecessor - the car became lighter by as much as 200 pounds thanks to the aluminum case.
I am glad that even the designers didn’t have a thought to carry out the carrying body hypothesis - it would have been completely different from the classic SUV we were used to. Also save both front and rear continuous bridges.
According to insiders, they are going to leave the company removable roof of three segments in two design variants - in tone of the body or painted in matte black paint. Optionally, it is possible that there will be a top of soft materials, which of the tuning proposals will be transferred to the base factory ones.
Despite the fact that Chrysler did not bother at the last tests, and simply covered the whole body with a camouflage cover,leaving on display only the wheels, as well as round embrasures for headlights and windows, the outlines of the future news are clearly visible and now you can make quite accurate assumptions about how it will look in practice.
The characteristic angular outlines of the doors without unnecessary frills, sloping rear rear (specifically, to properly organize the rear wheel housekeeping, but at the same time, not to lose in the convenience of planting), the precise geometry of the wheel arches, huge square rear-view mirrors - this, in fact, how the car will look to the side.
The impressive body part is probably planned both under the lid and under the kung, and it is balanced by a rounded elongated "nose", ending with large rounds of headlight-nostrils.
Renovation of the interior and equipment
Unfortunately, not much is known about the “filling” of this powerful off-road pie. We'll have to be patient and wait for the official premiere: this will most likely be the Los Angeles Auto Show this fall.
Some sources, based on information leaks, argue that this is a much more comfortable and spacious cabin, which, finally, will lose the notorious asceticism of decoration and equipment.
We should expect multimedia and electronic helpers at the level of at least RAM, or even higher. As well as a significant expansion of modifications, whose specificity will affect not only the functionality, technical characteristics and appearance, but also at the level of interior design, as well as equipment.
For the motor series, it is only reliably known that the in-line turbocharged unit on a diesel engine of 3 liters is planned. Will put the iconic Hurricane (2 liters, 4 cylinders) or six-cylinder Pentastar 3.6 liters - not reported. Otherwise, the following specifications are expected:
- start-stop function;
- total length - 5.2 m;
- all-terrain tires;
- cylindrical spring shock absorbers (like the new Ram 2019 model year);
- anti-roll bar;
- eight-speed automatic or six-speed mechanics.
On the market, a couple of representatives of the Big Three American automakers in the face of GM and Ford have already announced their plans for the flagships of this segment of the Chevrolet Silverado and the F-series.
It is quite logical that Fiat Chrysler hurried to adequately respond to the challenge, first by updating the Ram dudes, and then by their favorite workhorse - the Jeep Wrangler Scrambler.
It’s not serious to compare them with each other, because cars are completely different in style and designation, but, nevertheless, it can be stated with some confidence that if Ram has to fight with the competitors mentioned, then the new generation of the good old scrambler is tipped more relaxed existence in the market: the pool of its fans is constant and unchanged.
Of course, fans of the brand will not be able to resist the temptation to try an improved version of their pet, which, moreover, promises to be, according to estimates of even the most skeptical critics, “the most off-road pick-up truck.” Even despite the fact that, according to the head of the FCA, Sergio Marchionne, this model will be difficult to call cheap.
